Knox Presbyterian Church

A Church for the Family

Another pillar of the community, Knox Church is a great example of that is passionate about Naperville. With so many outreach opportunities, they certainly have made a lasting impact on the city. Knox believes that “A week without worship feels like a week without the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.” By participating in their worship, you will find a sense of hope and empowerment, and desire to build community among others. They’re smaller than some of the other churches, yet they send more people on missions trips than churches that see thousands in attendance. They clearly have a servants heart, and have ministry opportunities for all. They are truly a

Church for all Ages.

The mission of Knox Presbyterian Church is to LEARN, GROW and SERVE as followers of Jesus Christ.

We believe that God has called us together to be a community of faith in Jesus Christ who alone is Head of the Church. We believe Christ has commissioned us to advance God’s kingdom through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Knox will be a community where people encounter the living Christ:

  • Through their experience of welcome and worship
  • Through study of scriptures and the life of prayer
  • Through relationships in Christ and for Christ as we serve one another and the world in His name
  • Through finding ways and opportunities to grow as those who share His name and God’s Word with others

As followers of Jesus Christ we desire to be more like him in our everyday lives, and so we seek to:

  • Carry his message of grace and forgiveness in all that we do
  • Open ourselves to being carried and empowered to do these things through grace and the power of the Holy Spirit at work in each of us and all of us together
  • Discover our gifts and develop them in our service to God

Knox will be a community for all generations and all seekers.

  • Here we share the significant concourses of life, learning from one another, taking joy in our differences and sharing in the wonder of life.
  • This will be a place for those seeking the meaning of life as well as a place for faithful mentors.
  • This will be a community that, while large in size and able to enjoy the ministries of a larger congregation, will be a place where each individual and family are known and ministered to.

Knox offers three different worship services every weekend!

The 5:00pm service on Saturdays and 10:30am service on Sundays is a more contemporary service.

The 9:00am service on Sundays is a more traditional service.

Unlike other churches such as Good Shepherd and Our Saviour’s, Knox offers both types of worship in the same space.

Congregation Demographics and Participation

The traditional service at Knox is very full service, attended by people of all ages. The majority of the congregation of this service is on the older side, but you have a large number of families with small children, and a decent amount of young adults.

This congregation is a bit more reserved when it comes to their participation, but they are also clearly familiar with the music repertoire as they all sing the hymns either simply by reading the lyrics on the screen, or the music out of the hymnal.

Music

The music of this service is very traditional. The hymns all come from the Celebration Hymnal and the Presbyterian Hymnal. If worshipers can read music, they will pick up a hymnal out of the pews. If not, they simply look at the lyrics on the screen.

Music is led by a choir accompanied by a pipe organ, and the choir also performs an anthem and a postlude at the end of the service.

Order of Service

Their order of service follows the traditional sequence, which can found in their worship bulletin here.

Sermon

The sermon is not as much the focus of this worship service. While important, it is not nearly as long as sermons in other churches, and it seems to blend more into the worship service itself. It also seems that they follow a lectionary rather than having sermon series.

Prayers and Announcements

Prayers and announcements are both important parts of the worship service. This is the time when the pastors update the community. It is also a time for the community to come together to pray. Announcements seem like a conversation between the pastor and the congregation, as they use a conversational tone. Prayers are collected through cards and are read aloud by the pastor.

Congregation Demographics and Participation

During the observation of this service, it seemed that the congregation was much smaller. But this was due to the departure of a youth mission trip of over 100 people right before the service started. This service has a mixture of people similar to that of the traditional service, but is less popular. Participation is less prevalent and noticeable, as it seems that this congregation is quieter in nature.

This congregation is a bit more reserved when it comes to their participation, but they are also clearly familiar with the music repertoire as they all sing the hymns either simply by reading the lyrics on the screen, or the music out of the hymnal.

Music

The style of music in this service speaks to its label as being more contemporary. With drums, guitars, keys, and lead vocalists, it has a very different feel from the previous service.

Order of Service

Their order of service is much more laid back and contemporary. You can find it in their worship bulletin here.

Sermon

The sermon in this service is the same as the previous one, also not as much the focus of this worship service.

Prayers and Announcements

This is the same as the previous service.
